WHY IT MATTERS: Issues at stake in election

A selection of issues at stake in the presidential election and their impact on Americans, in brief:

Afghanistan:

The stakes now are similar to what caused the U.S. to invade almost 11 years ago: the threat of more al-Qaida attacks.

President Barack Obama says U.S. forces must not leave until Afghan forces can defend the country on their own. Otherwise the Taliban would regain power and al-Qaida might again launch attacks from there. Republican rival Romney appears to share that view.

What's often overlooked in the "al-Qaida returns" scenario is an answer to this question: Why, after so many years of foreign help, are the Afghans still not capable of self-defense? And when will they be?

The official answer is by the end of 2014, when the U.S. and its allies plan to end their combat role. The Afghans will be fully in charge, or so it is hoped, and the war will be over, at least for Americans.

___

Campaign finance:

This election probably will cost more than $1 billion. Big donors who help cover the tab could gain outsized influence with the election's winner. Your voice may not be heard as loudly as a result.

Recent court decisions have stripped away restrictions on how elections are financed, allowing the very rich to afford more speech than the rest. In turn, super PACs have flourished, thanks as well to limitless contributions from the wealthy - including contributors who have business before the government.

Disclosure rules offer a glimpse into who's behind the money. But the information is often too vague to be useful. And nonprofits that run so-called issue ads don't have to reveal donors.

Obama criticized the Supreme Court for removing campaign finance restrictions. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney supported the ruling. Both are using the lax rules with gusto.

___

China:

The U.S. accuses China of flouting trade rules and undervaluing its currency to helps its exporters, hurting American competitors and jobs. But imposing tariffs could set off a trade war and drive up prices for American consumers.

Tensions now have spread to the automotive sector: The U.S. is seeking international rulings against Chinese subsidies for its auto and auto-parts exports and against Chinese duties on U.S. autos. Romney says he'll get tougher on China's trade violations. Obama has taken a variety of trade actions against China, but on the currency issue, he has opted to wait for economic forces to encourage Beijing to raise values.

Cheap Chinese goods have benefited American consumers and restrained inflation. But those imports have hurt American manufacturers. And many U.S. companies outsource production to China. One study estimated that between 2001 and 2010, 2.8 million U.S. jobs were lost or displaced to China.

___

Climate change:

This year America's weather has been hotter and more extreme than ever before, records show. Yet the presidential candidates aren't talking about it.

In the U.S. July was the hottest month ever recorded and this year is on track to be the warmest. Scientists say that's both from natural drought and man-made global warming. Each decade since the 1970s has been nearly one-third of a degree warmer than the previous one.

Sea levels are rising while glaciers and summer Arctic sea ice are shrinking. Plants are blooming earlier. Some species could die because of global warming.

Obama proposed a bill to cap power plant carbon dioxide emissions, but it died in Congress. Still, he's doubling auto mileage standards and put billions into cleaner energy. Romney now questions the science of man-made global warming and says some actions to curb emissions could hurt an already struggling economy.

___

Debt:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects ? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. The government borrows about 40 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt is the total amount the federal government owes. It's risen to a shade over $16 trillion.

Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. He'd raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making more than $1 million. Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts. But many of the cuts he's pushing would be partially negated by his proposals to lower top tax rates on corporations and individuals.

___

Economy:

The job market is brutal and the economy weak. Nearly 13 million Americans can't find work; the unemployment rate has been higher than 8 percent for more than 40 months. A divided Washington has done little to ease the misery.

The economy didn't take off when the recession ended in June 2009. Growth has never been slower in the three years after a downturn. The human toll is staggering. Forty percent of the jobless, 5 million people, have been out of work six months or more ? a "national crisis," according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. Wages aren't keeping up with inflation.

Obama wants to create jobs by keeping taxes low for everybody but the wealthiest and with public-works spending, clean energy projects and targeted tax breaks to businesses. Romney proposes further cuts in tax rates for all income levels; he'd also slash corporate rates, reduce regulations and encourage oil production.

___

Education:

Education ranks second only to the economy in issues important to Americans. Yet the U.S. lags globally in educating its children. And higher education costs are leaving students saddled with debt or unable to afford college at all.

State budget cuts have meant teacher layoffs and larger class sizes. Colleges have had to make do with less. It all trickles down to the kids in the classroom.

Although Washington contributes a small fraction of education money, it influences teacher quality, accessibility and more. For example, to be freed from provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, states had to develop federally approved reforms.

Romney wants more state and local control over education. But he supports some of Obama's proposals, notably charter schools and teacher evaluations. So, look for them to be there whoever wins the White House.

___

Gay marriage:

Both sides of the gay marriage debate agree on this much: The issue defines what sort of nation America will be.

Half a dozen states and the District of Columbia have made history by legalizing it, but it's prohibited elsewhere, and 30 states have placed bans in their constitutions.

Obama supports legal recognition of same-sex marriage, as a matter decided by states. Romney says same-sex marriage should be banned with a constitutional amendment.

The debate divides the public down the middle, according to recent polls, and stirs up passion on both sides.

In November, four states have gay-marriage measures on their ballots. In Minnesota, the vote is whether to ban gay marriage in the state constitution. Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state are voting on whether to legalize gay marriage.

Thus far, foes of gay marriage have prevailed in all 32 states where the issue reached the ballot.

___

Guns:

Gun violence has been splayed across front pages with alarming frequency lately: the movie theater killings in Colorado, the Sikh temple shootings in Wisconsin, the gunfire outside the Empire State Building and more. Guns are used in two-thirds of homicides, according to the FBI. But the murder rate is less than half what it was two decades ago.

Neither Obama nor Romney has had much to say about guns during the campaign. Obama hasn't pushed gun control measures as president; Romney says new gun laws aren't needed.

It's getting harder to argue that stricter gun laws are needed when violent crime has been decreasing without them.

But the next president may well fill at least one Supreme Court seat, and the court is narrowly divided on gun control. An Obama appointee could be expected to be friendlier to gun controls than would a Romney nominee.

___

Health care:

America's health care system is unsustainable. It's not one problem, but three: cost, quality and coverage.

The U.S. has world-class hospitals and doctors. But it spends far more than other advanced countries and people aren't much healthier. And in an aging society, there's no reliable system for long-term care.

Obama's expansion of coverage for the uninsured hits high gear in 2014. Obama keeps today's Medicare while trying to slow costs. He also extends Medicaid.

Romney would repeal Obama's health care law but hasn't spelled out what he'd do instead. On Medicare, he favors the option of a government payment to help future retirees get private coverage.

The risk of expanding coverage: Health costs consume a growing share of the stressed economy. The risk of not: Millions continue uninsured or saddled with heavy coverage costs as the population grows older.

___

Iran:

With the Iraq war over and Afghanistan winding down, Iran is the most likely place for a new U.S. military conflict.

Obama says he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort.

Romney accuses Obama of being weak on Iran. He says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Attacking Iran is no light matter, however. That is why neither candidate clearly calls for military action.

Tehran can disrupt global fuel supplies, hit U.S. allies in the Gulf or support proxies such as Hezbollah in acts of terrorism. It could also draw the U.S. into an unwanted new war in the Muslim world.

___

Supreme Court appointments:

With four justices in their 70s, odds are good that whoever wins in November will fill at least one Supreme Court seat. The next justice could dramatically alter the direction of a court split between conservatives and liberals.

One new face could mean a sea change in how millions get health care, shape gay rights and much more.

Obama already has put his stamp on the court by selecting liberal-leaning Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, 50-somethings who could serve a quarter-century or more. Romney has promised to name justices in the mold of the court's conservatives.

Since the New Deal, Supreme Court decisions have made huge differences in American lives, from rulings to uphold Social Security, minimum wage laws and other Depression-era reforms to ringing endorsements of equal rights. Big decisions on health care, gun rights and abortion have turned on 5-4 votes.

___

Syria:

Syria's conflict is the most violent to emerge from last year's Arab Spring. Activists say at least 23,000 people have died over the last 18 months.

Obama wants Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power. But he won't use U.S. military force to make that happen.

Romney says "more assertive" U.S. tactics are needed, without fully spelling them out.

The future of Arab democracy could hinge on the crisis. After dictatorships fell in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen, critics say Assad's government has resorted to torture and mass killings to stay in power.

Its success would deny the U.S. a major strategic victory. Assad long has helped Iran aid Hamas and Hezbollah, destabilizing Lebanon while threatening Israel's security and U.S. interests in the Middle East.

But extremists among the opposition, Assad's weapons of mass destruction and worries about Israel's border security have policymakers wary about deeper involvement.

___

Taxes:

Almost every U.S. taxpayer faces a significant tax increase next year, unless Congress and the White House agree on a plan to extend a huge collection of tax cuts expiring at the end of the year.

And there's a huge debate over how to overhaul the tax code to make it simpler, with lower rates balanced by fewer deductions.

Obama wants to extend Bush-era tax cuts again, but only for individuals making less than $200,000 and married couples making less than $250,000.

Romney wants to extend all those tax cuts and enact new ones, dropping all income tax rates by 20 percent. Romney says he would pay for that by eliminating or reducing tax credits, deductions and exemptions. But he won't say which ones would go.

Most lawmakers want a simpler tax code, but millions count on the mortgage interest deduction, child tax credit and more, making progress all but impossible.

___

Wall Street regulation:

The debate over banking rules is, at its core, a dispute about how to prevent another economic cataclysm.

The financial crisis that peaked in 2008 touched off a global economic slowdown. Four years later, the recovery remains painfully slow.

After the crisis, Congress passed a sprawling overhaul of banking rules and oversight. The law gives regulators new tools to shutter banks without resorting to emergency bailouts. It restricts risky lending and establishes a new agency to protect consumers from misleading marketing and other traps.

The new rules also boost companies' costs, according to Romney and many in the business community. Romney believes the law is prolonging the nation's economic agony by making it harder for companies to invest and grow. He has pledged to repeal it. Obama fought for and supports the law.

SPRINT DRILLS AND SPRINT TRAINING, SO WEAR YOUR LOW HEELED RUNNING SHOES, SWEATS OR RUNNING TIGHTS OVER YOUR SHORTS.

8-10 100 METER SPRINTS, WALK BACK RECOVER AND RUN AGAIN.

Sprinting became a hot topic in the early 2000s, when research studies seemed to confirm the positive effects of adding sprinting to your workout routine. As compared to slow, steady, lengthy aerobic workouts, sprinting ? full-speed runs for a short period, usually less than one minute ? offers a number of health benefits. The old notion that aerobics, in the form of longer, slower stints of jogging or exercising on a stationary bike or an elliptical machine, is a better path to endurance took a hit when research indicated that sprinting increases both your anaerobic and aerobic capacities.

CARDIO CAPACITY

In 2011, ?The New York Times? quoted exercise physiologist Andrea Chernus, who says that sprinting raises your cardiovascular capacity by pushing your anaerobic threshold. She notes that sprinting offers a harder workout than slow and steady cardio work. As a result of incorporating sprinting into a workout routine, distance runners can increase their speed, and athletes in sports such as baseball and soccer can increase their quickness.

STRENGTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

Longtime coach Michael Paladin, writing for the Health and Fitness Solutions website, says that sprinting will reduce body fat and strengthen you far better than regular aerobic exercise, since sprinting uses the maximum degree of your muscles. After roughly eight seconds of sprinting, your fast twitch muscle fibers are activated. These fibers grow when activated, and can give you a more muscular look, closer to the look of track and field sprinters as opposed to the emaciated look of many distance runners. Sprinting increases human growth hormone in a natural way, which is beneficial for both men and women, writes Paladin. The increase in HGH builds muscle mass, enhances the immune system and promotes weight loss.

CARDIO HEALTH

The brief bursts of high intensity running followed by periods of recovery appear to strengthen the heart. The recovery periods don?t stress your heart as much as long and slow cardio workouts. Plus, sprint workouts take up a shorter period of time and are more fun than the fixed routine of a traditional cardio workout. Research at McMaster University in Canada, cited on the Exercise Physiology website, indicates that you can increase your endurance as well as your speed by incorporating sprints into your workouts. A group of recreational exercisers added sprints on a stationary bike to their normal exercise routine. Doing six sessions of 30-second, flat-out sprints, broken up by recovery periods, over a two-week period of workouts doubled the endurance times of the cyclists, a sure sign of increased heart and lung strength.

CONSIDERATIONS

Paladin recommends sprints of 50 to 100 yards, broken up by rest periods of one to two minutes of walking, not jogging. Repeat five to 10 times. Your total sprint distance should range from 400 to 800 yards. However, if you reach the point where you no longer can sprint flat-out, end the workout. Sprint workouts can be done two or three times per week, depending upon your exercise routine on the other days. However, if you are older and/or just returning to an exercise routine, start out gradually and work up to a full sprint workout over a period of weeks or months. And always check with your doctor before commencing a new exercise program.

Imprisoned Tymoshenko makes video appeal

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukraine's jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is urging her country to defeat President Viktor Yanukovych's party in next month's parliamentary election.

In an emotional video appeal, Tymoshenko accused Yanukovych of turning Ukraine into a "police state."

Her lawyer says the video, released Saturday, was recorded by him on a cellphone in a hospital where she is receiving treatment for back pain. It was the first such video since she was jailed over a year ago on charges of abuse of office.

The West has condemned her imprisonment as politically motivated. Tymoshenko urged Ukrainians to support her party in the Oct. 28 election and end Yanukovych's alleged "criminal" rule.

Yanukovych's Party of Regions hopes to maintain its parliamentary majority; the next presidential election is in 2015.

Long-Term Care Insurance And Your Loved One

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Friday, 28 September 2012 07:31 Insurance is a rather common purchase; people buy car insurance, health insurance, homeowner???s insurance, and even renter???s insurance. Long-term care insurance is just as valuable as these other policies, as it is designed to assist families in paying for the costs associated with senior care. he home care professionals at Always Best Care of Alamance, serving Alamance and Guilford Counties, as well as the communities of Burlington, Southern Greensboro, Jamestown, High Point, and Roxboro, know that the cost of elder care can become overwhelming for many families. As such, they encourage you to look into the value that long-term care insurance can provide.

hat Is Long-Term Care Insurance?
Long-term care insurance is exactly what it sounds; this kind of policy covers expenses that are associated with the long-term care of elderly individuals. Oftentimes, the assistance of home care professionals is necessary for an elderly individual to continue aging in place. For this reason, families may decide to call in the services of senior care providers, who assist with daily activities. These activities range from one case to another, but many times encompass grooming, dressing, eating, etc.
While the benefits associated with long-term care insurance vary from one plan to the next, this is the kind of assistance that the plan will, generally, cover.
What Should Your Family Look for in a Policy?
As with any form of insurance, long-term care insurance policies change from one company to the next. Likewise, insurance companies may offer a variety of plans to better meet the needs of a wider range of families. The best thing to do when choosing a policy is to talk with your loved one???s doctor to determine what to anticipate in terms of care. Next, schedule a meeting with an insurance professional to discuss the options available.
Collecting the Benefits of a Long-Term Care Policy
Another topic to discuss with your insurance professional is how to collect the benefits that the policy has to offer. The insurance company your family chooses may require you to submit claims on your own or it may work directly with home care providers. Ask your insurance professional exactly how claims are handled and if you will need to personally do anything to ensure that the benefits are dispersed.
The home care professionals of Always Best Care of Alamance know that long-term care insurance is an important part of a family???s financial plan. They encourage you to talk to your insurance provider about the policy options that are available to your elderly loved one.

UBS wins dismissal of shareholder lawsuit

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I just got some shocking news. His father -- age 81 -- is leaving his wife of 60 years! Mom is not entirely self-sufficient and seems dependent on him.Dad found himself a younger woman -- a "chick" of 70. He has announced that he still has sexual needs and wants to enjoy the rest of his life. My husband thinks it will be a short-term fling and he'll return to Mom, but she says she won't be taking him back. (Who knows how she'll feel later?)My problem is, no matter what happens between them, I'm having a hard time even considering forgiving him for his selfishness. ...

FILE- In this Sept. 19, 2012, file photo, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo speaks during a news conference in the Red Room at the Capitol in Albany, N.Y. Accusations of sexual harassment that emerged over the summer have unraveled in public before a state ethics committee, revealing more sexual misconduct accusations against an assemblyman and a secret six-figure payoff to the accusers with taxpayer money that was approved by one of the most powerful lawmakers in the state. (AP Photo/Mike Groll, File)

(AP) ? It was an odd assignment for the young, pretty staffer when she was ordered to go along on a trip to Atlantic City with her boss. But the reason soon became clear.

She said she spent much of the trip struggling to fend off the advances and kisses of 72-year-old Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez. He was persistent, she said, and eventually put his hand between her legs.

She and another female staffer said it was part of a regular routine of office harassment that included inappropriate touching and comments about their bodies, how they dressed and even how they were getting along with their boyfriends. They said the job included writing letters to Lopez about how much they loved their jobs ? letters Lopez complained were "insufficiently effusive," according to his official censure.

The accusations that emerged over the summer are hardly unusual in a state capital, especially Albany, which has such a rich history of sexual misconduct by lawmakers that it has its own, unwritten Las Vegas-like code: What happens north of Bear Mountain stays there.

But what began as a relatively modest scandal has pierced the veil of the so-called Bear Mountain Compact, unraveling in public before a state ethics committee, revealing more sexual misconduct accusations against Lopez and a secret six-figure payoff to the accusers with taxpayer money that was approved by one of the most powerful lawmakers in the state.

That lawmaker, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, was initially singed by the scandal, with some political opponents calling for his resignation. A special prosecutor is investigating whether crimes were committed, and a wide-ranging probe by the state's nascent ethics watchdog is exploring the roles played by other powerful Democrats, including the attorney general and comptroller.

How effectively the Joint Commission on Public Ethics handles the politically charged case will reflect on the man who created it as part of his campaign promise to "clean up" Albany: Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, long considered a possible presidential candidate in 2016.

"You will always find situations where people do things wrong," Cuomo said. "You will always find situations where people in power make mistakes, or abuse their power, or abuse their authority, or are corrupt or venal."

"The question becomes when people make a mistake, or when a bad thing is done, what is the response?"

In the case of Lopez, a longtime Democratic dealmaker who was lampooned in New York City tabloid headlines as "King Leer" and "Gropez," the allegations that emerged over the summer were found credible by New York's Assembly ethics committee. The panel censured him Aug. 24, and Silver stripped Lopez of seniority perks and power.

The censure revealed a previously unknown set of accusations against Lopez made in June that were settled secretly with $103,000 in public money approved by Silver. That deal was crafted with input from lawyers with the attorney general's and comptroller's offices.

Lopez, who has called the scandal an "onslaught of character attacks," said: "I have never sexually harassed any staff, and I hope and intend to prove in the coming months the political nature of these accusations."

Cuomo is the third governor in a row to try to put more teeth in ethics oversight. Four years before Cuomo took office, Democrat Eliot Spitzer created his own ethics board to sanitize Albany, only to resign amid charges he solicited prostitutes. His Democratic successor, David Paterson, was forced to admit on just his second day in office that he had affairs with a "number of women" while a state senator.

Such clashes of sex and power have become part of the lore of Albany, where a cluster of taverns a short walk from the Capitol had for years featured a loud mix of pols and young staffers mingling over scotch and steaks. In the 1990s, the New York Post's front page declared Albany "Sin City."

And a decade ago, the Albany County district attorney investigating claims of sexual harassment and rape in the Capitol put it this way: "Any father who would let his daughter be an intern in the state Legislature should have his head examined."

After the initial flurry, Silver appears to have blunted any serious threat to his power from this scandal.

Silver, a 69-year-old lawyer from Manhattan, is one of Albany's most powerful, little-understood and private of figures, called "the Sphinx" by some for his ability to prevail in budgets and policy.

A renowned political strategist, he may even have strengthened his position by making sexual harassment harder to get away with. By publicly admitting he was wrong to seal the case with a confidentiality agreement and promising not to do any others, he issued a strong early warning to lawmakers.

Democratic Assemblyman John McEneny says the Lopez case has already struck back at sexual harassment, just as previous reforms to the legislative intern program addressed some of the barhopping and relationships with young ? usually female ? staffers.

"Individually, there will always be a problem as long as there are human beings," said McEneny, a member of the Assembly ethics committee. "But institutionally, we tend to take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes near Mexico's Baja Peninsula

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the southern tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, on Tuesday and caused panic, but local officials said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake's epicenter was located 46 miles north of La Paz, Mexico, and was centered in the Gulf of California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"It felt pretty strong," said Ivan Calderon, a Baja California Sur state civil protection official, adding there were no reports of damages or injuries.

"So far there have just been some reports of people panicking, but nothing serious," Calderon said.

He said school was suspended across the state on Wednesday while officials examined sites for damages. Some other public buildings would also be closed Wednesday for checks, he said.

A magnitude 6 earthquake is capable of causing severe damage. Four more tremors, magnitude 4.8 or less, followed the bigger quake, all clustered north of La Paz, the USGS said.

The southern part of Mexico's Baja Peninsula is sparsely populated outside of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, and the tourist resort of Los Cabos, located about 98 miles to the south.

Coral hotspots found in deepwater canyons off northeast US coast

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For the first time in decades, researchers have conducted an extensive exploration for deep-sea corals and sponges in submarine canyons off the northeastern coast of the US. The survey revealed coral "hotspots," and found that a new coral habitat suitability model could help predict where corals are likely to occur. The model is being developed by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and the National Ocean Service's Biogeography Branch.

Among the canyons surveyed during the July 6-18 cruise aboard the NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow were Toms, Middle Toms, and Hendrickson canyons off New Jersey, and Veatch and Gilbert canyons off Georges Bank. All of these were known or suspected habitats of deep-sea corals. More than 70 deepwater canyons, ranging in depth from 100 meters (about 330 feet) to more than 3,500 meters (about 11,500 feet), exist along the Northeast US continental shelf and slope. Few are well studied.

"The deep-sea coral and sponge habitats observed in the canyons are not like those found in shallow-water tropical reefs or deep-sea coral habitats in other regions," said Martha Nizinski of NEFSC's National Systematics Laboratory in Washington, DC, a zoologist and deep-sea coral specialist who served as the chief scientist on the recent research cruise aboard the NOAA ship Bigelow. "We know very little about the distribution and ecology of corals in the canyons off the Northeast coast," she said. "Although our explorations have just begun, we've already increased our knowledge about these deepwater coral habitats a hundred times over."

Findings from this cruise will not only improve knowledge about deep-sea life off the Northeastern US, but will also aid the New England and Mid-Atlantic fishery management councils in their efforts to manage these habitats, which support a variety of fish species and other marine life.

The July survey on the Bigelow was the culmination of a larger mission to explore deepwater canyons, and gain increased knowledge of deep-sea corals. The Bigelow was one of three NOAA ships involved in the Atlantic Canyons Undersea Mapping Expeditions (or ACUMEN), which has been used to document the deepwater canyons on the continental shelf and slope from Norfolk, Virginia, to New England. During February-June 2012, the NOAA ships Okeanos Explorer and Ferdinand R. Hassler extensively mapped offshore areas designated as priorities by the NEFSC deepwater coral research team and external partners.

Using high-quality multibeam sonar maps, NEFSC scientists and collaborators explored the deepwater canyons in the Northeast. Cruise objectives included gaining a better understanding of deep-sea coral diversity and distribution in the region, and testing the accuracy of a habitat suitability model to predict where deepwater corals exist in the Northeast.

Bottom topography, as well as various other environmental factors, historical coral records, and model predictions helped guide the search and sampling of coral habitats. The science team aboard the Bigelow, using TowCam, a towed deep-sea digital imaging system operated by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), was then able to photograph what was on the bottom at the sites they chose, which is important for groundtruthing the modeling data.

Many corals observed during the Bigelow cruise live at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters (roughly between 650 and 6,500 feet deep). Although no specimens were collected during this expedition, more than 38,000TowCam images will be analyzed in the coming months. Data derived from these images will be used to evaluate the presence or absence of corals in areas having historical records; to quantitatively verify the habitat suitability model; and to enhance knowledge of the diversity and distributions of deep-sea corals in the region. These data will also provide the baseline information for a three-year research effort in the Northeast funded by NOAA's Deep-Sea Coral Research and Technology program.

"These are the first surveys in several decades for deep-sea corals and sponges in the mid-Atlantic," said David Packer, a marine ecologist at the NEFSC's James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, NJ. Packer participated in the Bigelow cruise, and was excited about the amount and variety of corals, sponges, and related marine life encountered during the survey and the importance of these findings for the future of deep-sea coral research in the region. "We previously had little or no data about some of the canyons or the available data were decades old, so what we learned in just a few weeks provided a 'quantum leap' in our knowledge about the canyons and their habitats."

The modeling effort to develop the predictive habitat suitability maps was conducted by Amy Drohan at the NEFSC's Sandy Hook lab and Brian Kinlan and Matt Poti, both at NOS. Kinlan participated in the Bigelow cruise and was able to use his expertise to interpret the model findings in the field as well as help guide the search for coral hotspots.

Although the July cruise focused on only a few of the canyons mapped using multibeam sonar, the researchers will also use the bathymetry data collected by the Okeanos Explorer and the Hassler at other deepwater canyons to refine and revise their coral model. In fact, work has already started on a revised model incorporating the new findings.

"Like the hub of a wheel with many spokes, the July Bigelow cruise was central to a project that seemed to grow over time as opportunities arose to leverage resources and use these to their fullest potential," said Nizinski, who has studied deep-sea coral habitats off Florida, off the North Carolina coast, and in the Gulf of Mexico.

"What originally started with 16 days of ship time, provided and funded by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center to explore deepwater canyons off the Northeast coast, rapidly developed into a much larger project," Nizinski said. "What started with informal discussions between NOAA and colleagues led to a major field program that first surveyed and mapped deepwater canyons along the northeast continental shelf and slope, followed by underwater observations to verify coral occurrence. We are excited about the possibilities given the results from this first cruise."

BlackBerry 10 guide - Know Your Cell

Research In Motion gave us the clearest picture yet of its upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system?and said it is building its next-generation, mobile-computing platform around a few key things: productivity, reliability, security, multitasking and the keyboard. Let's take a look at what it showed off during its BlackBerry Jam developer event.?

RIM said it has rebuilt its operating system around simple, yet powerful gesture interfaces. It's courting developers to make third-party apps (maybe trying too hard) but the company said that the in-and-out-of-apps metaphor that's common with the iPhone and Android is somewhat out of date. Instead, RIM built BlackBerry 10 around the idea of fluid multitasking and this is evident in BlackBerry Flow and BlackBerry Hub.?

BlackBerry Flow?

BlackBerry Flow starts from the moment when you wake up the device, as you simply swipe up on the screen to wake it up. The lock screen displays things like recently-received emails or upcoming calendar appointments and you can interact with these by tapping on them.?

Flow is built around the idea of enabling users to quickly gain access to the information they need with simple gestures, and another aspect of that is called BlackBerry Peek. Let's say you're in your full-screen calendar app, by swiping up from the bottom, the calendar will become smaller and you'll be able to swipe over to your integrated messaging inbox, known as BlackBerry Hub.?

BlackBerry Hub

RIM is known as a messaging powerhouse and the BlackBerry Hub will be the place to go to keep track of your e-mails, Twitter, Facebook updates and BlackBerry Messages. The BlackBerry Hub is accessible from nearly any screen by making a specific swiping gesture (swipe to the right when you're in BlackBerry Peek). Within the hub, you can get all of the contact information including content from LinkedIn and Facebook in one central repository.?

If all the gestures seem a little confusing, you may be right. Over at CNET, they said the BlackBerry 10 operating system shows promise, but there is somewhat of a steep learning curve to understand how Flow, Hub and Peek work. In some ways, this reminds me of the ill-fated PlayBook?and its gesture-based controls.?

BBM

The new BBM continues to have that real-time communication element that people love, but it's also been revamped to look more modern and incorporate BlackBerry Flow and Hub. Thanks to what RIM is calling Active Frames, when BBM is minimized on your home screen, you'll still be able to see the most recent message. This is similar to the Live Tiles we've seen in Windows Phone.

BlackBerry Keyboard

Of course, it wouldn't be a BlackBerry without a good keyboard and RIM is very proud of the software keyboards that will be coming with BlackBerry 10. The BlackBerry 10 keyboard will automatically learn how you type and it will even be able to auto-correct in multiple languages without you having to toggle between settings. That's quite impressive.?

I know some of you out there don't care how good a software keyboard is, you just want your physical keys. You'll be happy to know that RIM is committed to bringing out a BlackBerry 10 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard in the not-too-distant future.?

BlackBerry Balance

RIM is known to be a big player in the corporate space, so it's making it easy for companies to keep their data separated from their employees' personal data on the phone. With the BlackBerry Balance feature, users will be able to tap a button and the device will swap between personal and business.?

This means you'll be able to pull up all your corporate apps and the associated data by tapping on a button and there will even be a specific corporate BlackBerry App World.?

Third-party apps

While RIM is very proud of the Flow and Hub elements of BlackBerry 10, which will let you get a lot done without having to hop into apps, it's still courting developers. We saw demonstrations from Facebook and Foursquare and these third-party apps integrate well with the core functionality of the platform.?

We also spied icons for apps from Box, Twitter and LinkedIn and you can expect a host of other consumer and enterprise apps. RIM is also laying out a $10,000 guarantee for BlackBerry 10 app makers who hit certain criteria.?

How does it stack up?

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins is at least being realistic with BlackBerry 10, as he recently said that it could be the third-most used operating system behind iOS and Android. After studying the demonstration a bit more, I'm intrigued by what RIM is baking up but I'm still not convinced it can overcome the "too little, too late" syndrome.?

BlackBerry is actually still growing outside the United States and it now has more than 80 million users (most of the growth is within developing markets). BlackBerry 10 is doing some very interesting and valuable things too, but I still don't see it making much of a dent in the adoption of the iPhone 5 or the high-end Android market.?

Dethroning Windows Phone for third place is a much more achievable goal, but I still don't think it offers what Microsoft is going to have. If BlackBerry 10 was already on the market, I'd like RIM's chances a lot more but considering we won't see the inevitably immature first version until 2013, I'm not very optimistic about its chances.?

You can watch the entire demonstration from the BlackBerry Jam keynote below:

The Apple Maps furor is overblown

1 day

Do not, I repeat, do not use Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6 ? if you live on the Falkland Islands, or plan on visiting in the near future. Seriously, you will be lost.

If you're in Seattle, or any other major U.S. city, you should be fine. In fact, if you upgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 6, you get passably good turn-by-turn navigation functionality ? something you would have had to pay for on the old iOS version ? for free.

That Maps thing that everyone and their mom seems to be yowling about? The criticism is out of proportion to the actual flaws.?

And as flawed as it may be (and we'll get to that), it makes sense for Apple do this.?The iPhone maker decided, sensibly, to push its chief competitor off of one of its main stages, after years of providing a pre-loaded revenue stream.

By swapping out a Google-powered Maps with a more?homegrown one, what does Apple bring??

The big boon for iOS users is?a?free turn-by-turn navigator, which can?get you from Point A to Point B with Siri's robotronically soothing voice and 3-D visuals that are at times so fun to look at, they could prove to be a distraction. (The renderings can be dazzling on highway on-ramps, for instance.)

There's also?Yelp integration: Pop-up star ratings appear on restaurants and landmarks that you search for, and when you click through, you immediately pull up the Yelp page. As someone who can't stand Yelp reviewers but nevertheless uses Yelp data religiously, I look forward to saving time and effort by using this.

Where the "fly-over" 3-D photo imagery?feature is enabled, it looks?great, and delivers higher-resolution satellite?imagery than you could get on the old Maps app.

As far as I can tell, those sponsored landmarks ??the ones?that netted Google some extra cash but never served you any purpose ? are gone. Yes, big?up to Apple for not shoving ads in your face when you're searching for a barber?shop. That was getting annoying in iOS 5, and I'm glad it's gone in iOS 6.

Apple's?traffic reporting is ...?different. Instead of the spaghetti of green, yellow and red that you'd see on a Google map, you see chokepoints highlighted in red lines, and some scary-looking alerts here and there.?I haven't decided yet if it's sensible minimalism or just missing information (and part of me misses seeing green and thinking "Go go go!"),?but you may actually prefer it.

The iOS 6 update brings all of that, for free, and if you don't like it, you can just keep on using ?Google Maps.?

"Wait, what??" you ask. "Didn't Apple kill off Google Maps?" No, and if you don't believe me, click here.?

If you visit Google Maps on an iPhone's Safari browser, you can even tap "Add to Home Screen" and voila, you have a Google Maps Web app that does most or all that the old native Maps app did.?

Google is sure to launch a?native Maps app for iOS shortly?(just like it did when Apple discontinued the pre-loaded YouTube player). When that happens, the map experience will only get better. Through competition. Apple vs. Google in a fight where no matter who loses, you win.

The ugly
But yes, there are flaws in Apple's Maps app.?

Bridges can?look crazy, rural roads can go missing ? more?egregiously, while one train station disappeared in London, an?airport suddenly?sprung up in Ireland.

Besides the bugs, a big Apple Maps issue is the lack of public transit information. Google's database can tell you when your bus is scheduled to arrive, while Apple's new service can't even tell you what bus to take. (There are, of course, many free iOS apps that can, along with the aforementioned?Google Web app.)

In a measured response to the outrage, Silicon Valley heavy (and Apple veteran) Jean-Louis Gass?e explained that, while the maps can be messy, the problem is not cartographical in nature. Apple simply didn't deliver the message correctly:

The demo was flawless ? but not a word from the stage about the app?s limitations, no self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping the frontrunner, Google Maps.

Map databases can be improved in realtime,?and?though?Apple and its partners are clearly?having growing pains?trying to merge map data, 3-D renders and aerial photography, that's bound to improve.?Consumer Reports echoes this in a press release, stressing the map database's ability to improve without requiring an?iOS update:

Maps feels like a new application rolled out in beta form.?Given the ease for pushing app updates to users and the server-side nature of Maps (meaning, the maps and other data are downloaded on the fly as needed), a rapid evolution is quite possible.

As a free application, Maps is definitely a welcomed addition to the iPhone universe, although at this moment, it does not compete well with established, third-party nav apps nor dedicated portable navigation devices.

So, let's review the facts:?

A) There are flaws in Apple's Maps database.

B) These flaws very likely do not affect you in any way.

C) These flaws will be fixed and served up without you updating any software.

D) There is a lack of public transit information, which may or may not affect you, but is partially remedied by apps.

E) You now get free turn-by-turn navigation and instant links to Yelp pages ? and no ads.

F) GPS-enabled Google Maps are still?available on iPhones and iPads?for free, through the Safari browser.

G) A Google Maps app for iOS will likely be here soon, too.

Now that you know all of that, are you still mad? Or are you asking yourself, why was I ever mad? Let me know. I don't want to apologize for Apple on this ? in fact I agree with Jean-Louis Gass?e and Consumer Reports, going so far as to say that?Apple should publicly brand Maps "beta" software, like Siri ? but let's all calm down.?

It's not the end of the world, it's just the beginning of one new way to look at it.

Concerns Over Bailout Funds Weigh on Euro, Lift ... - Forex Broker

The Japanese Yen and the US Dollar are leading the majors today as some risk-aversion has taken hold amid broadening concerns out of Europe. We note that these influences are three-fold: German business sentiment as measured by the IFO dropped further as investors remain reticent despite the European Central Bank?s ?bazooka? plan; the German Finance Ministry has dismissed reports suggesting that the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) would be leveraged from ?500 billion to ?2 trillion to accommodate the future bailouts of Italy and Spain; and media has concentrated on some disagreements between French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in terms of a pan-European banking union.

With respect to the ESM, the German Finance Ministry did note that no number has yet to be agreed upon for the leverage that will be employed, so essentially it is hapless to speculate on the size of the ESM. That?s that, for now.

With respect to the disagreement between French and German leaders, Chancellor Merkel refuted President Hollande?s quip that the banking union should be completed on a timetable of ?the earlier, the better.? With the ECB buying politicians time, it is off little surprise that the urgency behind implementing the necessary safeguards has died down a bit. But Chancellor Merkel is making sure leaders get this round of measures right even as financial markets ?are watching Europe [and] want to see results,? saying that ?[the banking union] has to be thorough, the quality has to be good and then we?ll see how long it takes,? she said.

Taking a look at credit, peripheral European bond yields are mixed amid the Euro?s weakness. The Italian 2-year note yield has increased to 2.231% (+11.7-bps) while the Spanish 2-year note yield has decreased to 2.973% (-2.7-bps). Likewise, the Italian 10-year note yield has increased to 5.080% (+5.2-bps) while the Spanish 10-year note yield has decreased to 5.716% (+5.1-bps); higher yields imply lower prices.

EURUSD: Price has traded below soft support at the 61.8% Fibo retracement (February 2012 high to the July 2012 low) at 1.2934 today, breaking to fresh lows unseen in the Fed?s QE3 era. The daily RSI has exited overbought territory and is trending lower, though the 4-hour RSI is close to oversold again with some significant diverging (given the relationship between price and RSI the last time the 4-hour RSI was at this level). Interim resistance lies at 1.2930/35, 1.2970/75 (5-EMA), 1.3145, 1.3165/70, and 1.3240. Near-term support comes in at 1.2820/30 (200-DMA, late-April swing high) and 1.2825/30 (20-EMA, 200-DMA).

USDJPY: The USDJPY continues to move lower off of the pullback at trendline resistance last week, spurred on by a general feeling of disappointment on the BoJ?s newest stimulus measures has created the ideal sell-off situation. Now that price is below 78.10/20, 77.90, 77.65/70 (June 1 low), 77.45/50, and 77.10/15 (September low). A close above 78.10/20 leaves open the possibility for a rebound to 78.60 and 79.10/30 (100-DMA, 200-DMA, descending trendline off of the April 20 and June 25 highs).

GBPUSD: The pair has pulled back to the key 5-EMA at 1.6210 (for an indication of short-term strength) and as noted last Thursday, ?the gap between the 5-EMA and the 20-DMA has started to turn lower, suggesting a compression of price is occurring. If the 5-EMA holds, we?re looking for further rallies; if not, support is close by.? This has proven to be the case the past few days, though a break of the 5-EMA is threatening today. The key 1.6120/40 level, broken on Friday, remains our guide for bullish/bearish price action. As long as the GBPUSD closes above said level this week, the door is open for a move towards 1.6400 by the end of the month. The former April swing highs at 1.6260 (by close), 1.6300 (by high) are in focus, now that the descending trendline off of the April 2011 and August 2011 highs broke last week. Below 1.6120/40 support comes in at 1.6030/35 (20-DMA), 1.5970 (ascending trendline off of August 2 and August 31 lows, former channel resistance off of June 20 and August 23 highs), and 1.5770/85 (late-August swing lows).

Concerns_Over_Bailout_Funds_Weighs_on_Euro_Lifts_Japanese_Yen_body_Picture_2.png, Concerns Over Bailout Funds Weigh on Euro, Lift Japanese Yen

AUDUSD: The pair remains range bound the past several days, trading in a 120-pip range the past three-days. The descending trendline off of the August 9 and August 23 highs has kept the pair supported the past four-days, and it remains that the 20-EMA overlapping at 1.0420/25, a base could be building for the next move higher. As long as this level holds today ? despite the intraday spike lower ? we continue to look higher. Near-term resistance comes in at 1.0410/25 (descending trendline off of the August 9 and August 23 highs, 20-DMA, mid-August swing lows), 1.0480/85, 1.0550/60, and 1.0615/30 (August high). Support comes in at 1.0365/80 (last week?s low, 50-EMA) 1.0325 (200-DMA), and 1.0250/70.

Concealed Cameras ? Some Incredible New Uses | ArticlePDQ.com

You probably understand what most people use spy cameras or hidden cameras for: nanny cameras; home security; to catch a cheating partner, partner or boyfriend; to catch a cheating employee; or to help keep an eye on that workman in your house. These are the main uses for criminal cameras or hidden cameras. Here are some amazing new and strange uses for hidden cameras that we thought we had share with you.The first is as a training device, particularly in income, where a speech is very important. Generally a script is needed. When variants from that program can risk the sale, if the sales associate and a manager can watch the presentation of a new salesman to find defects in the presentation, a hidden camera can function as a valuable management tool.In the place of hr, two of the harder issues to report are intimidation and sexual harassment. Usually it is a said, she said? scenario without witnesses. In which a hidden camera provides first class evidence that?s. With both audio and spoken documentation of mysteries were happened by what are solved. And last however, not least could be the part of recording elder abuse. Elder abuse is a lot more predominant today than you would imagine. A government study recently indicated that 60% of all nursing homes encounter some kind of elder abuse. Usually the victims have dementia or Alzheimer?s and have a hard time verbalizing their dilemmas. A hidden camera will be the only method to record that. One of what exactly that make hidden cameras or criminal cameras so effective is that they?re hidden inside objects that are frequently seen around a company, home or business. As a matter of fact they are therefore common that folks do not think hard about seeing them. Items such as for instance alert clocks, wall clocks, air cleaners and clock radios are some situations of the more commonly used goods that property spy cameras.A wonderful example could be the Coke Can DVR Spy Camera. Anything gets registered superior with coke! Many hidden cameras these days not just have the camera inside but have a recording device like a DVR. Some ?body worn? hidden cameras have even a small microphone to record audio in addition to saving video. The DVRs most frequently use an card to record the audio and video. The SD card can then be introduced right into a computer?s SD card reader for easy playback. So those are some new uses for hidden or criminal cameras that you may not of considered before; to file sexual harassment or bullying, as an exercise tool for personnel and to catch elder abuse.

3 Necessary Tools for the High Rolling Affiliate ... - Free Traffic Secrets

This blog post has been optimized using Keyword Winner

What does it take to become a successful Affiliate Marketer?

What are the ingredients of an affiliate marketing success story?

Is there a shortcut to Affiliate Marketing glory?

All these questions play around in the minds of affiliate marketers who want to make it big in this business.

Although affiliate marketing is touted as one of the easiest and most effective ways to earn money online, it is not as easy as it sounds. The wise affiliate marketer plans every action and executes it the best way he can. He should also maximize the potential to earn by utilizing the right tools necessary for a successful Affiliate Marketing business.

We have consulted some of the most successful affiliate marketers in the business and below are the top three necessary tools for a successful affiliate marketing business.

Important Tool #1: Your Own Website

The most important and indispensable tool in Affiliate Marketing is your own website. The first step in any successful affiliate marketing business is building a good, credible and professional looking website.

Your website is the jump off point of all your marketing efforts. Thus, you must first build a user-friendly website, which will appeal to your prospects and encourage them to click on the links to the products and service you are promoting and make a purchase. Therefore, you must first concentrate your efforts in building a website that will cater to what your prospects need.

The most important thing you should consider is that almost all web users go online to look for information, not necessarily to go and buy something. Above all else, make your website full of original, relevant and useful content.

People will love articles that are appealing and helpful. Keep in mind that, in the internet, content is still king and good quality content will not only build your credibility, it can also help you achieve a higher search engine ranking.

By posting relevant and useful articles, you establish yourself as a credible expert in the field, making you a more trustworthy endorser of the product or service you promote. Establishing a good reputation is a good step in building up a loyal consumer base.

Important Tool #2: Incentives

Competition is extremely tight in the internet world. You must always be one-step ahead of your rivals to ensure that you capture a significant share of your target market.

Therefore, you must use every possible means to encourage people not only to visit your site but also to click and proceed to the websites of the products and services you are promoting.

Building an opt-in email list is one of the best ways to gather prospects. Offer a newsletter or an e-zine. Better yet, offer incentives to your prospects to encourage them to subscribe to your newsletters. You can present free softwares, access to exclusive services and other freebies that will be helpful to your prospects.

Important Tool #3: Link Popularity

The importance of driving highly targeted traffic to your website cannot be emphasized enough. The all-important web traffic is at the top of the list of the most important entities in the internet world.

Attracting people to your site should be the first step you should carry out. Do everything to achieve a high search engine ranking. Link Popularity is one of the factors that search engines use to determine search engine rankings. Therefore, to enhance your link popularity, you must launch an aggressive reciprocal link campaign.

One of the best ways to do this ? at no cost at all ? is by submitting articles, with your website?s link at the resource box, to e-zines and free article sites. You will not only gain exposure, you will also have the opportunity to advertise for free, just include a link back to your site.

The more sites you submit your articles to, the better your link popularity is. Make your articles original, relevant and useful so that more websites will pick it up and post it.

These are but three of the many tools that an affiliate marketer can use to maximize earning potential. The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your imagination, creativity, resourcefulness and determination.

You can always explore other ideas and adapt other strategies, which you think might help you become a high rolling affiliate marketer.

However, the most important factor is that you need to have a website that will not disappear from the search engine listings.

Lenovo ThinkPad 2 pegged for October 26th release, with a $799 price tag

DNP Lenovo ThinPad 2 pegged for October 26th release, with a $799 price tag

In the land of tweets and tell-alls, keeping privileged information on the down-low is next to impossible. Oddly enough, pricing and release details for the ThinkPad 2 didn't require much espionage. At last night's PepCom event, Lenovo reps told WP Central that the Windows 8-powered slab will be available on October 26th for $799. This price point might be a tad on the high side for some, but it does include the tablet's optional keyboard. As a refresher, the ThinkPad 2 sports a 10.1-inch IPS display, an Intel Atom processor and NFC, all powered by an alleged 10 hour battery. For the data gluttons out there, AT&T's LTE is on the menu stateside. Whether or not this pricing and release information holds true, we'll still have to see what else surfaces before making a final decision this holiday season.
