Armstrong's fall from grace may help cycling

FILE - This July 29, 2001 file photo shows Lance Armstrong riding past the Arc de Triomphe waving the Texas flag after he won the Tour de France cycling race, in Paris. The superstar cyclist, whose stirring victories after his comeback from cancer helped him transcend sports, chose not to pursue arbitration in the drug case brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. That was his last option in his bitter fight with USADA and his decision set the stage for the titles to be stripped and his name to be all but wiped from the record books of the sport he once ruled. (AP) ? Cycling supporters say that Lance Armstrong's fall from grace, while sad, may benefit the sport in the future by demonstrating to potential cheaters what can happen to them ? eventually ? if they dope.

Former Tour de France champion Bernard Thevenet told French newspaper Le Monde that Armstrong's lifetime ban and loss of his seven Tour de France titles "is really a very strong message to cycling and those around the sport who might be tempted to cheat."

Cycling's credibility has been repeatedly battered since the Festina scandal in 1998, when entire teams were ejected from the race.

Imaging study sheds new light on alcohol-related birth defects

Thursday, August 23, 2012

A collaborative research effort by scientists at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Duke University, and University College of London in the UK, sheds new light on alcohol-related birth defects.

The project, led by Kathleen K. Sulik, PhD, a professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at UNC, could help enhance how doctors diagnose birth defects caused by alcohol exposure in the womb. The findings also illustrate how the precise timing of that exposure could determine the specific kinds of defects.

"We now know that maternal alcohol use is the leading known and preventable cause of birth defects and mental disability in the United States," Sulik said. "Alcohol's effects can cause a range of cognitive, developmental and behavioral problems that typically become evident during childhood, and last a lifetime."

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is at the severe end of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). First described in 1972, FAS is recognized by a specific pattern of facial features: small eyelid openings, a smooth ridge on the upper lip (absence of a central groove, or philtrum), and a thin upper lip border.

In its full-blown state, FAS affects roughly 1 in 750 live births in the U.S. And while clinicians typically look for those classical facial features in making a diagnosis, within the broader classification of FASD "adverse outcomes vary considerably and most individuals don't exhibit the facial characteristics that currently define FAS," said the study's lead author Robert J. Lipinski, PhD, a postdoctoral scientist in Sulik's lab. "This study could expand the base of diagnostic criteria used by clinicians who suspect problems caused by maternal alcohol use."

In their animal-based studies, the Sulik lab team has collaborated with co-author G. Allan Johnson, PhD and his group at Duke University's Center for In Vivo Microscopy. Johnson, professor of radiology and physics, has developed new imaging tools with spatial resolution up to a million times higher than clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These include small bore tools suitable for imaging fetal mice that are only 15 mm long.

To quantify facial shape from MRI data, the study team turned to co-author Peter Hammond, a professor of computational biology at UCL's Institute of Child Health, in London. Hammond invented powerful new techniques for 3D shape analysis that have already proven successful in objectively defining facial shape changes in humans.

In the study, described in the August 22, 2012 issue of the online journal PLOS ONE, Lipinski and Sulik treated one group of mice with alcohol on their seventh day of pregnancy, a time corresponding to the third week of pregnancy in humans. A second group of mice was treated just 36 hours later, approximating the fourth week of human pregnancy. The amount of alcohol given was large, "high doses that most women wouldn't achieve unless they were alcoholic and had a tolerance for alcohol," Sulik said.

Near the end of pregnancy, the fetuses were then imaged at Duke University. These 3D data sets showed individual brain regions, as well as accurate and detailed facial surfaces, from which Hammond and research assistant and co-author Michael Suttie performed shape analyses.

The team found that the earlier alcohol exposure time elicited the classic FAS facial features, including characteristic abnormalities of the upper lip and eyes. What they observed in fetuses exposed just 36 hours later, however, was a surprise. These mice exhibited unique and in some cases opposing facial patterns, such as shortened upper lip, a present philtrum, and the brain, instead of appearing too narrow in the front, appeared wide.

"Overall, the results of our studies show that alcohol can cause more than one pattern of birth defects, and that the type and extent of brain abnormalities?which are the most devastating manifestation of prenatal alcohol exposure?in some cases may be predicted by specific facial features," Sulik said. "And, importantly, alcohol can cause tremendously devastating and permanent damage at a time in development when most women don't recognize that they're pregnant."

Tallahassee, Fla. (PRWEB) April 26, 2010

Next Wave SUCCESS launches online portal site connecting Tallahassee area pet owners to local pet-related businesses and other local pet lovers.

Found at http://www.TallahasseePetCONNECT.com, the online service helps pet-related business owners harness the power of local search marketing, social media, online coupon distribution and video marketing to attract and retain local customers easily and affordably.

TallahasseePetCONNECT gives local online shoppers an easy way to find, research and review top area veterinarians, pet sitters, trainers, walkers, feed & pet stores, groomers, pet fencing, boarding kennels, riding stables, pet friendly hotels, professional breeders, aquariums, pet photographers, pest & cleaning services, as well as animal rescue and shelter resources, all in one easy-to-navigate website. Online forums allow users to connect with other local pet lovers.

TallahasseePetCONNECT.com business members receive private login access to their own dedicated webpage on the site including their business description, interactive mapping, photo gallery, video gallery-YouTube uploads, EZ Coupon uploads, Facebook Fan Page set-up, customer reviews, hours of business, e-mail link, brochure/flyer downloads, personal website link, training videos, and included free in the daily Featured Business rotation on the websites home page.

TallahasseePetCONNECT uses Social Media tools like Blogs, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to introduce local pet owners to the website and their business members. Proven search engine marketing techniques help to attract buyers searching online for local pet-related products & services specifically. Weekly gift certificate give-a-ways redeemable at member businesses and ongoing targeted e-mail and direct mail marketing campaigns help members reach the folks they need to reach?local pet owners!

?We address the two greatest concerns of small business owners today: Reaching new customers online and staying in touch with current clients.? says Steven Bailey co-founder of TallahasseePetCONNECT.

TallahasseePetCONNECT.com also helps their business members get listed in local search results on search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and Bing, improving chances that they will be seen by online shoppers. Unlike the national listing portals, business members are included in ongoing local marketing campaigns and receive real world video training on how to better compete in today?s online marketplace.

With over 74% of households now using the Internet when shopping locally for products and services, the Internet has become an important part of reaching customers and building brand recognition for local businesses. Unfortunately, most Internet marketing solutions are simply too expensive and time consuming for busy small business owners. Even if they pay thousands of dollars to design a website, most do not know how to promote it to their existing or potential customers.

?We know most independent merchants don?t have the time or resources to learn and manage all of the different ways larger companies connect with consumers online. That?s why we decided to create the site. Now, a local pet business owner can market like the big dogs on a chihuahua budget!? said Bailey

TallahasseePetCONNECT.com provides much needed value to local pet-related businesses and services for a very reasonable annual subscription fee. For only $ 99 a month business owners can gain access to the complete suite of marketing features. However, during the Initial Launch Period businesses can join for only $ 49 a month for a professionally managed online campaign.

About Next Wave SUCCESS

Founded in 2005, they provide ?guerrilla? marketing, consulting and social media management services to SMB?s throughout the US and Canada. Their expertise enables local businesses to leverage the power of the Internet to attract and retain customers. Group marketing projects like TallahasseePetCONNECT allows Next Wave SUCCESS to offer its services to small business owners for a fraction of their normal consulting and management fees. Four other Florida markets are planned to launch within the year.

wordplay gush: Interview With Writer Sadie Smythe | Julie Gillis

I?m a big fan of my friend and Bedpost Confessions co-producer, Sadie Smythe. She?s not only got a great sense of humor, a brilliant writer, but she?s focused more on more on the absolute beauty of staying in the moment, connected, in every way. Here I interview her about her work around sexuality and sobriety.

1) Tell me about your new consulting and speaking practice? I know you?ve always had a passion for education around sexuality, but what?s different about this?

My consulting practice stems from my personal experiences with non-traditional relationships ? specifically non-monogamy/polyamory/open relationships. As a writer on this subject for many years, I am often called upon to consult those who are experiencing turmoil within their own relationship structures (traditional or otherwise). I found that my perspective was deemed valuable by many people and so I decided to expand and offer it to whomever might be seeking guidance. I often find that it isn?t so much the relationship that needs re-setting or repairing, but the individuals themselves that just need a little insight on viewing situations differently.

My speaking practice came to fruition after I?d told my story at a couple of BedPost Confessions shows on my experiences with sex and how they were impacted by alcohol. I was approached by an alarming number of people afterward (men and women, young and not young) who told me that they had never had sex totally sober ? that alcohol had always accompanied their sexual encounters. This, plus some further research, enlightened me that our drinking culture has created a massive disconnect between people. Alcohol not only acts as a barrier to intimacy, but it also can inhibit us from making rational decisions surrounding our sexual health that can have psychological, emotional or physiological implications. I speak from experience here.

2) What has surprised you the most as you?ve moved into this niche of human sexuality?

When I did my research, I discovered a study that indicated that 80% of first sexual experiences occur under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I am not sure why that surprised me as that was my own experience. But it scared me a little. Actually a lot. As a mother, I want my daughter to know the beauty of sex, and I want her first experiences to be authentic, engaging, and enjoyable. When alcohol impairment is factored in, so many things can go wrong. We actively preach and discourage teenage drunken driving, but there is a tacit acceptance of teen/young adult drunken fucking. This makes no sense to me. Our sexual selves are so vulnerable, especially in the beginning. I want everyone to understand that when those first sexual experiences are good, then the kids experiencing them are more likely to be set up to have fulfilling sexual lives. Whether or not we want to acknowledge this, it is important.

3) Will you tell me a little about how connection and intimacy are related to sober consciousness and how you address that in your work?

Our culture teaches us that having a drink together bonds people, and in some ways it does. The practice of sharing a drink with someone creates an intimacy that can indeed be the precursor to a relationship. The same phenomenon occurs over tea. Coffee too. However indulging in tea and coffee isn?t going to make an otherwise responsible adult choose not to use a condom with the person they just met at a bar. There is a domino effect that can occur when you are experiencing temporary brain damage (which is, technically, what being drunk is). You may be having fun, but you aren?t completely present. You might not be totally present with your environment, with your partner, or even with yourself.

4) What could someone expect from a session with you? Can you talk to us a little about the process?

I sit down with (in person, on the phone, or via Skype) with whomever I am consulting and I have them tell me a little bit of their story and what is it they want to work through. I listen actively and with empathy, and we essentially have a conversation much like one might have with an old friend. It?s rather casual in approach, and I often relate my own experiences if they are relevant (which they often are.) This is a very different style from traditional therapy, and is one I think necessary. If there is one thing I have learned it is that people want someone who truly understands exactly what it is they are going through to hear them. I can, and do, offer that perspective.

5) Finally, how do we get in touch with you and start exploring sober sexuality?

You can visit my consulting website at sadiesmythe.com or find me through my personal blog at thatswhatsadiesaid.com or email me at Sadie Smythe
